Ultimate PC Upgrade

28 posts in this topic

So, I bought a new PC a few months ago but I think I need more power. I WANT MOAR..

Alright, so this is what I have now:

  • CPU: i5-4570
  • GPU: Gigabyte 3XWindforce GTX770 2GB
  • Mobo: MSI B85-G41 PC Mate
  • HDD: Seagate 1TB and WD 1TB (blue)
  • RAM: 8GB Dual Channel (Crucial Ballistix Tactical BL)
  • Screen: LG22E53
  • Cooler: Gelid Solutions Tranquillo Rev2

So I have like 320 euro to spend. I guess I'm going to buy a new CPU.

I've been looking at this so far:

  • Intel i5-4690K
  • Intel Xeon E3-1240v3
  • Intel i7-4770(non-k and K)
  • Intel-4790K
  • Yes, I'm looking at the best desktop CPU's on the market :P

Alright, so the problem is, am I going to OC or not. Probably not. Those CPU's can do the job for the next coming years, I guess.

If I pick the i5-4690k, I could buy this too:

  • CPU & SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB

For the others, I can buy the CPU and save some money for later.

I'm not sure about what to do. I don't think I need a SSD, but on the other hand, it's always good to have one.

So, what are your opinions on this? Any suggestions?

Please don't reply if you don't know what you're talking about. ;)

To be honest, they are saying i5 is more for gaming and i7 is for more like rendering and that such stuff. But I call that a bit bullcrap. the i7 can better multitask and got then more power for things. I would go for the i7 and save after that money a bit and buy a SSD from 250GB for like 150 euro.

And why 2x HDD from 1TB?.. thats just money waste. I would sell the Seagate 1TB and keep the W&D Blue 1TB and buy from that money a SSD. The SSD is only ment for starting programs fastly. I would use the SSD for the windows side like word/excel/your school things etc and the 1TB HDD for games or movies.

Because I had one from my old PC, forgot about it, so I bought a new HDD with my PC a few months ago, haha :P

Alright, I'll look into selling that one because I don't need to have 2TB space because I still have a 2TB External HDD :P

Alright, so the problem is, am I going to OC or not. Probably not. Those CPU's can do the job for the next coming years, I guess.

If you doubt whether you will OC or not, go for Xeon. With a K processor ya wud need a Z mobo to fully benefit from the minimal performance gain.

DON'T GET THE NON-K i7 BECAUSE IT IS JUST AS POWERFUL AS XEON BUT IS 60€ MORE EXPENSIVE!

Also, get 1231v3 instead of 1240v3 since the only difference I can see between them is the price tag :dave: and 1231v3 is newer (Q2 2014) than 1240v3 (2013).

Xeon E3-1231v3: http://www.jimms.fi/tuote/BX80646E31231V3

Xeon E3-1240v3: http://www.jimms.fi/tuote/BX80646E31240V3

i5-4690K: http://www.jimms.fi/tuote/BX80646I54690K (no hyper-threading and only 10€ cheaper)

i7-4790: http://www.jimms.fi/tuote/BX80646I74790 (CRAP! DON'T TOUCH! :angryarnold:)

I'm not sure about what to do. I don't think I need a SSD, but on the other hand, it's always good to have one.

I didn't get a SSD either :sir:

With SSD yar PC wud boot faster, the programs/games installed on it wud start in <½ of the time (compared to HDD) and you might get a minimal FPS boost in games that create a cache file on hard drive (like Arma2).

Cheap & good 256GB SSD: http://www.jimms.fi/tuote/CT256MX100SSD1

Gud gud bear.

Alright, I'll look at the Xeon, because, I don't give a fuck about intergrated GPU :)

At the moment I'm trying to sell stuff I have here (2 iPhone 4s's, my old CPU if I'm going to upgrade, HDD, some other iPhone parts)

Does it matter that I have a "cheap" mobo? It's only chipset B85

No, but since Xeon E3-1231v3 is a Haswell refresh CPU, ya might need to update BIOS. I have ASUS H97-PLUS mobo (H97 is Haswell refresh board).

Alright. I can sell the iPhone's for 240 euro. I guess I'm going to save it for later, since I'm not sure whether I need a new CPU since this one does the job quite good actually :P

I can always buy one later on ;)

I'll just buy some new games (GTA V woohoo)

4770/k is poo, 4790k is the CPU you want and befoe Bear gets in here and teaches us how xeons are as gut as i7's, he should keep in mind his xeons are somewhere @ ~3.4GHz while 4790k is @ 4.4GHz turbo by default thus pwning Xeons which have locked multipliers :dave: Problem is you'll need Z97 mobo (i heard some H97 [cheaper] mobos also have OC unlocked but they're rare)
Bear face it, you've bought xeon because it was offered to you in a special deal with mobo and gpu and so you are not allowed to speak bad about muh lovely i7 K grade cpus :dave:

PS. don't touch i7-4790 (without K), it's a trap

So far your i5 cpu should be enough, wait a few months for 4790k prices to drop and then upgrade :dave:

Since AMD has more or less dropped out of the CPU race, Intel has taken their foot off the gas releasing new more powerful CPUs.  I can't justify upgrading my overclocked i5-2500k yet, works like a charm for everything I do.

2.  :dumb: you bought 4770k, sold it to "UPGRADE" (pls  :dumb:) to 4790k :dumb:

3. if you planned to overclock your cpu, why are you still using the stock cooler??  :dumb: and you had to underclock it to prevent it from overheating :dumb:

braxi face it, you're an idiot when it comes to pc parts :angryarnold: HAHAHAHAHAHHAH!

i highly recommended you not to reply to these pc part threads anymore :dumb:

EDIT: not to mention your "itx" case is actually matx lel. prodigy is the biggest itx case and its matx version is the same size. itx mobo = no expansions

I bought dual 256GB samsung SSDs and it was the single best component upgrade where I noticed the biggest change. 16sec boot up times. Photoshop, games, pinnacle studio etc all load immediately whereas before there was always a delay. It made my computer quicker for everyday stuff that I do the most.

Personally I have a lot of patience, so tbh I don't really care about boot times and load times :>

I'd rather spend more money on something else then a SSD, but for now I'll save it, like braxi said, I'll just wait like a year and I'll buy a top range CPU if I need to. :P
